Cognism Signs Armed Forces Covenant

Cognism commits to honouring and supporting the Armed Forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

Cognism, an equal opportunity employer, reinforces its commitment to treating people fairly by signing an important document. A promise to offer equal opportunities and support to those who have served in the Armed Forces.

The Ministry of Defence states:

“[People serving in the Armed Forces] put the needs of the Nation, the Army and others before their own. They forgo some of the rights enjoyed by those outside the Armed Forces.”

“So, at the very least, British soldiers should always expect the Nation and their commanders to treat them fairly. To value and respect them as individuals, and to sustain and reward them and their families.”

Cognism, as a UK HQ’ed company with a CEO and founder who started his early career in the Ministry of Defence, feels a duty to support those who served in the UK armed services.

When a request from an employee asked Cognism to formalise this commitment by signing the Armed Forces Covenant, there was no doubt.
James Isilay, Cognism CEO, says:

“As a company, we highly value the incredibly difficult and risky work the armed services do for the safety of our country.”

“We are putting processes in place to help those leaving the armed services and charities linked to supporting those people in landing on their feet.”

Cognism commits to offering fair opportunities to candidates and employees throughout the employee lifecycle.

Katie Harrison, Cognism’s Global HR Lead, says:

“When individuals leave the Armed Forces and are looking for other work, some struggle because they’re said to not have enough relevant industry experience.”

“By signing this Covenant, we are saying ‘we see you, and we think your skills would be well suited to one of the roles available at Cognism’.”

Essentially, levelling the playing field for those applying for roles up against others who have had a chance to achieve higher education or get field experience.

Katie adds:

“This is the next step in our commitment to being an equal opportunities employer. We want to show we care about people from any and all backgrounds. And that extends to work experiences.”

“We’re dedicated to building a diverse workforce. Anyone can be a part of this Cognism journey.”

“Our ultimate goal is to offer exciting careers for ex-servicemen and women after they leave the Armed Forces.”

Cognism represents this change in a number of ways, including:

  • Promoting Cognism as an Armed Forces-friendly organisation to staff, customers, suppliers, independent contractors and the wider public.
  • Ensuring any advertised role descriptions appropriately communicate the opportunities for ex-Armed Forces.
  • Recognises military skills and qualifications in its recruitment and selection process and provides flexibility in granting leave for service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment.
  • Grant additional paid or unpaid leave for annual Reserve Forces training, supporting any mobilisations and deployment and actively encouraging staff members to become Reservists.
  • In addition to supporting national events such as Armed Forces Day, Reserves Day, Poppy Appeal Day and Remembrance activities.
